Walmart "Honors" 9/11 Via Distasteful Coke Display

April 2024 · 3 minute read

We are just a couple of days away from September 11.

This, of course, is one of the most important dates in American history, following the terrorist attacks that killed over 3,000 people in 2001.

There are many ways in which individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9/11, along with those who are still affected by this horrible tragedy.

You can say a prayer. You can donate money to various 9/11-related charities.

Heck, you can just hug your children a little bit tighter.

Just appreciate your loved ones as much as you can.

Sadly, however, there are also many ways in which stores and companies can dishonor those who lost their lives on 9/11…

… and we’ve seen two offensive examples of this in the past few days alone.

First, as previously reported, a mattress company in San Antonio aired what has to be the most distasteful commercial in the history of the world.

You probably think we’re exaggerating.

But we’re not. See for yourself below:

The only thing better (by which we mean much, much worse) was the attempt at an apology by the woman featured in the above ad.

See that for yourself here:

And now comes the story of a Walmart store in Florida that has come under fire for building a large display of Coke products in the shape of the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center.

As you can see below, a banner is hung across the top of these cartons.

It features the skyline of lower Manhattan, along with the words "We Will Never Forget."

This has become the tagline, for lack of a better term, for the terrible events that befell America on September 11, 2001.

They are not meant to help a store promote the sale of its soda.

Directly below that banner?

Another sign that reads, "Rollback $3.33," referring to special price for the the Coke Zero, Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and other soft drink boxes on display below.

As the person who shared the above photo wrote very simply on Twitter:

"Florida c’mon man."

Seriously. Come on, Florida Man. Come on, Florida Woman.

And now: come on, Florida Walmarts.

This display has since been taken down, with a Coca-Cola spokesperson responding to the backlash as follows:

"This display was meant to honor local firefighters and to support their organization’s upcoming event.

"We sincerely apologize that anyone was offended or misunderstood its intent, and we have replaced the display."

Can we please make it a law that 9/11 can never be used in any sort of promotional campaign?

Heck, can we make it a law that the America flag cannot be used in any sort of promotional campaign?

What do the stars and stripes have to do with the selling of soda, beer or any other products?

It’s not patriotic to use the flag as part of a PR campaign. It’s just exploitive.

Need we say anymore?

We’re pretty sure the above Tweet sums up our argument.
