Crazed fan: Mark David Chapman gunned down Lennon in front of The Dakota building in Manhattan just over five hours after The Beatles star had signed the album
After the shooting, a building superintendent found the signed album in the planter and turned it into police to be used as evidence in the case, according to the New York Daily News.
Investigators in the case returned to album to the man who had found it about a year after the murder along with a letter of gratitude from the district attorney.
Remarkably, the cover and dust jacket still contains forensically enhanced fingerprints of Chapman.
The Dakota employee, and lifelong Beatles fan, went on to sell it to a private buyer for $150,000 in 1999. It was sold again in 2010 for $850,000.
Locked up! Chapman, now 65, has been in prison for nearly 40-years and has been denied parole 11 times since 2000
Chapman had been a fan of the Beatles, but in the years leading up to the murder he developed a series of obsessions and became incensed by Lennon's lifestyle and public statements.
Imprisoned for nearly 40 years, the now 65-year-old has been denied parole 11 times since he became eligible in 2000. He remains in custody in the Wende Correctional Facility near Buffalo, New York.

Chapman will next be eligible for parole in 2022.
