Chipotle's Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift Joke Goes Viral

August 2024 · 4 minute read

Travis Kelce is once again trending online—but not because of his relationship with Taylor Swift, but for a variety of his old posts on social media.

Kelce, 34, has been linked to the 33-year-old pop superstar since September, and the couple appeared to go public with an evening out in New York in October. This year, Swift has shown up to multiple Kansas City Chiefs games and Kelce was spotted at Swift's Eras Tour show in Argentina on Saturday.

Now people are sharing his old tweets on X, formerly Twitter, which the Chiefs star has been posting to since September 2009. Swifties are enjoying his old ruminations on everything from naps to squirrels, with fast-food chain Chipotle also joining in on the fun.

Newsweek reached out to representatives for Kelce via email Thursday for comment.

On April 27, 2011, Kelce posted to X: "Went from class to therapy, now I need some #chipolte and then I'm off to check out my new apt!!"

In response, the Chipotle X account reshared his post, quoting the Swift song "Anti-Hero." It wrote: "It's me, hi."

The post went viral on the platform and as of Thursday, the post had 1.4 million views and 12,500 likes.

Erin Wolford, vice president of external communications at Chipotle told Newsweek: "When Travis Kelce's old tweets referencing the brand started resurfacing on X, we knew there was an opportunity for us to organically engage in an authentic way. The biggest challenge was deciding which of his posts to select and the strongest corresponding copy. With a team of in-house Swifties, we will stay for this conversation."

The account didn't end its fun there, as it continued in the comments. After someone said Kelce was "so real" for his Chipotle post, the account for the fast-food chain responded: "He's always been one of us fr [for real] - Scott."

When someone else asked the chain for a free burrito in the comment section, Chipotle wrote: "Incomplete pass - Scott."

Another commenter pointed out the fact the footballer misspelled Chipotle in his tweet, to which the brand said: "We're still crying - Scott."

This isn't the first X user to point out the spelling mistake, as multiple people have teased the Kansas City Chiefs tight end about his "commitment" to misspelling, specifically regarding the word "chipotle," which he frequently typed out as "chipolte."

"I'm fr I'm tears over his commitment to this spelling," one X user posted with an accompanying screenshot of Kelce's enthusiastic tweets about "Chipolte."

"Chipolte for life," one account wrote alongside a screenshot of Kelce's multiple misspellings.

Among the many viral re-shares was a post from April 14, 2011, which had Kelce observing the behavior of a squirrel after giving it a piece of bread. He spelled the words "squirrel" and "piece" incorrectly.

"I just gave a squirle a peice of bread and it straight smashed all of it!!!! I had no idea they ate bread like that!! Haha #crazy," he wrote.

Kelce and Swift's relationship has been heating up over recent weeks. When the NFL star was in the audience at Swift's Saturday concert in Buenos Aires, she tweaked the lyrics to her hit song "Karma" to include a nod to Kelce.

"Karma is the guy on the Chiefs, coming straight home to me," Swift sang.

The original lyrics are: "Karma is the guy on the screen, coming straight home to me."

Once the show ended, video footage online showed Swift running backstage into the arms of Kelce, who kissed her.
